According to Oregon Geographic Names, 6th Edition by Lewis L. McArthur, p.543:
Shaniko was named for a pioneer settler, August Sherneckau. He came to Oregon after the Civil Warand bought a farm near the present town of Shaniko. Indians pronounced hios name "Shaniko" and that is how the town got its name. The Sherneckau ranch was on the stage route from The Dalles to central Oregon and August Shernekau opened a stage station to profit from the travelers. Shernekau later moved to Astoria and then to California where he died. The area was previously known as Cross Hollow. The Cross Hollow post office operated from 1879-1887. The Shaniko post office opened in 1900.
